Kotka Human Rights Film Festival – the power of film to provoke thought

25.8.2025 | For the third time, the Kotka Human Rights Film Festival (KHRFF) returns to the program. Screenings will take place from 28–30 August at Kino Trio 123 cinema and online across Finland on 31 August.

“We want to offer a free opportunity to encounter human rights themes and human stories from different perspectives through film,” says the festival’s producer Wafa Ameli. “Our aim is to evoke emotions, increase understanding, and encourage discussion on human rights issues. Participation is easy, since all screenings are free of charge, and every film includes Finnish subtitles,” Ameli emphasizes.

The festival program consists of short films, documentaries, and animations, addressing themes that remain highly topical today: freedom, hope, discrimination, and courage.

“The Kotka Human Rights Film Festival is an excellent addition to Kotka’s cultural life,” says Cultural Director Tomi Purovaara. “The city’s values – courage, fairness, and love – are beautifully reflected in the presentation of these films and stories. A big thank you to the festival team for making it happen!” Purovaara adds.

The event is free of charge, with Finnish subtitles for all films. Venue: Kino Trio 123 (Kotkankatu 9, Kotka). On 31 August, the films will also be available online throughout Finland.
