In August, 2,400 new students will start at Xamk

27.8.2025 | The semester for new students at South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences, Xamk, begins with an orientation week. During the first week, students are introduced to the practices and digital systems of the university of applied sciences, and they get to know the campus facilities and services through a campus orienteering activity together with tutors, who are second- or third-year students.
“Student Union Kaakko is responsible for training and guiding Xamk’s tutors. At the moment, we have more than 300 tutors for both Finnish- and English-taught degree programmes, and tutors can choose the type of tutoring they want to provide. We offer five different specialisation areas, from which a tutor can select a maximum of two. In the tutor training, general matters related to the study path are covered, and depending on the specialisation, also topics such as group facilitation and student well-being. The most important role of tutors is to help new students adapt to the university of applied sciences and to student life. They may, for example, organise events that support new students in building friendships and starting their studies,” says Eetu Mansikka, Specialist in Tutoring and Guidance at Student Union Kaakko.
In addition to the support provided by tutors, Xamk offers various forms of student well-being support, including workshops, information sessions, opportunities for one-on-one discussions, and a range of sports groups. International students arriving in Finland are further supported by integration coordinators, who, together with Xamk’s stakeholders, assist with practical matters such as finding accommodation, learning about Finnish culture, and arranging events where international students can network with fellow students as well as with local organisations, helping them settle into the country.
Students continuing their studies will return to campus on 1 September.
New students will begin in bachelor’s and master’s degree programmes across four campuses or in online studies, with both Finnish- and English-taught options available.
In Kotka, 578 new students will start, of whom 91 are pursuing a master’s degree. A new addition to Kotka’s programme offering is the Efficient Supply Chain Management bachelor’s degree, which is being launched for the first time.

Two new degree programmes are being launched in Mikkeli: Water Technology and Sustainability, leading to a bachelor’s degree in engineering, and Nursing, which enables nurses qualified abroad to become licensed to practise in Finland.
In Savonlinna, 260 new students will begin, including 50 starting master’s studies. Savonlinna will also launch a new bachelor’s degree programme in Bioproduct Technology, leading to an engineering degree, as well as a new master’s degree programme in Sports Medicine and Exercise Physiology.
