HaminaKotka port traffic is experiencing strong growth

9.4.2025 | In January to March, 3,658,725 tons of goods passed through the HaminaKotka port, which is 26.7 percent more than the same period last year.
The relative growth percentage is high and is due to last year’s long port strikes, which distort the comparison. However, the absolute traffic volume is not as strong as the growth percentage would suggest. Finland’s exports are still weak due to demand difficulties, and export challenges are partially reflected in imports as well. However, the overall traffic volume is at a fairly reasonable level.
In exports, the volume of goods increased by 36.3 percent compared to the same period last year. The biggest increases in tons were seen in dry bulk (+61.2%), sawn timber (+52.3%), wood pulp (+45.8%), and paper (+22.2%). In percentage terms, the biggest increase was in liquid bulk (+166.6%). In exports, the volume of breakbulk goods (-29.6%) and the “other goods” category (-47.8%) decreased.
Import traffic grew by 6.6 percent. The biggest increases came from dry bulk (+80.6%) and breakbulk (+28.7%). Liquid bulk also grew (+4.9%). On the import side, there was a decrease in roundwood (-5.6%) and the “other goods” category (-10.4%). Transit traffic grew by 52.8 percent.
A relatively large number of containers, 63,510 TEU units, were handled in March compared to recent times. In January to March, container handling increased by 37.5%.
In March, 188 vessels visited the port, which is 19.4 percent more than the previous year.
The first half of last year and this year is not comparable due to last year’s spring strike. A proper comparison between the years is expected to be possible after Midsummer.
