The battery cell factory project planned in Kotka is progressing

Starting from spring 2023, Finnish Minerals Group has been preparing an EIA procedure (environmental impact assessment procedure) for the battery cell factory planned in Kotka, and today SVOLT Energy Technology (SVOLT) has told that it is planning a new investment in the manufacture of battery cells. SVOLT states in its press release that Finland is one possible location of the future factory.

The total value of the investment in a battery cell factory can reach several billion euros

The EIA procedure for the planned battery cell factory in Kotka examines a maximum annual production capacity of 50 gigawatt hours. Roughly estimated, a capacity of 10 gigawatt hours means an investment of around one billion euros. The total value of the investment can rise to several billion euros, and it would bring up to 2,500–3,500 new direct jobs to the Kotkan-Hamina region.

“The city of Kotka has invested and is still investing in a significant way in order to get clean energy projects established in our area. We are naturally happy and positive that the joint work of both the city and the region is bearing fruit. For Kotka to be chosen as the location of this factory, I hope that the government will do everything to bring the project home to Finland. The city of Kotka can contribute to the location decision by its own actions, but it is clear as day that the state has and must play a significant role in repatriating such a large investment. Now it is a real place for the Government Council, which is only a few months old, to show where Finland is positioning itself in terms of industrial investments coming our way”, says Esa Sirviö, Mayor of the City of Kotka.

“In addition to traditional industry, Finland needs high-tech investments and economic growth, and the Kotkan-Hamina region can provide these. The work done in our region also supports the implementation of Finland’s battery strategy in an excellent way, and it is a pleasure to notice that our work brings added value to Finland in many ways. At the same time, the location of the battery industry in our region would naturally be the starting point for the new industrial rise in the region”, says David Lindström, CEO of the regional development agency Cursor Oy.

The Kotkan-Hamina region is becoming a central concentration of the battery value chain in European terms

The determined work started in 2017, based on the region’s competitive green energy infrastructure and sustainable supply chains, to establish the battery industry in the Kotkan-Hamina region is reflected in regular positive news from our region. The Hamina pCAM project and the Kotka CAM project have previously been announced. The city of Kotka, Cursor and other local actors have been working closely under the leadership of the Finnish Minerals Group for years to enable the location of the battery cell factory in Finland and Kotka.

With the realization of all ongoing projects in the battery industry, a significant battery cluster is emerging in the Kotkan-Hamina region, even on a European scale.
