Changes in services

Open early childhood education activities and clubs have been closed.

Schools will switch to remote studying. This applies to grades 1-9 and vocational schools effective from Wednesday 18 March onwards and to upper secondary schools (lukio) already since Tuesday 17 March.

Pupils/students and their guardians will be contacted by the school with instructions.

Courses organised by Kotkan opisto have also switched to remote studying.

Youth centres have closed but youth counsellors can be contacted through social media channels or by phone.

Maritime Centre Vellamo and Aquarium House Maretarium are closed. Kymi Orchestra and Kotka’s Theatre will cancel all their shows until the end of May. Kotka’s Concert Hall and “Nelosteatteri” are also not open for shows or rehearsals.

Kotka’s public swimming pools, in Karhula and in Kotkansaari (Katariina) are closed from 12 March onwards. Other sporting facilities, such as ice skating rinks, school gyms and outdoor sport fields are also closed.

Libraries will close from Wednesday 18 March onwards. This will also halt the library bus service, which will not operate while libraries remain closed. Book loans can be renewed and e-books borrowed using

Kotka’s City Hall is only open to those with an already agreed appointment. Decision-making is also affected and only mandatory meetings of e.g. city’s executive board will be held.

Services operating as normal

Daycare, kindergartens and pre-school are operating as normal, excluding the open early childhood education facilities. The Early Childhood department will instruct families further on what to do e.g. in cases where a family member returns from abroad.

Schools will remain open for children in grades 1-3 for families where guardians are deemed to be in jobs critical to the society. School lunch and transport are organised as normal for the pupils attending schools.

The busses are also operating as normal, but with strong recommendation to only use Waltti-card to pay for the fare. New Waltti-cards can be purchased online at or at Karhula’s R-Kioski, Eteläinen Karjalantie 3.

Other services and offices will remain open as usual; any changes will be informed here.

City of Kotka has set up a contingency management team to prevent the spread of corona virus. The team will monitor the situation closely and react with necessary means to the rapidly changing situation.
